The coastal problem
Airborne salt accelerates corrosion at every coating weakness — edges, threads and the underside of spouts. Budget tapware with thin electroplating typically shows pitting within two to three years near the sea.
What to specify
Solid brass bodies with PVD finishes are the most resilient combination widely available in South Africa. Ask for the substrate, not just the colour name.
- Solid brass body, PVD finish — best coastal performance
- Chrome on brass — acceptable inland, rinse regularly at the coast
- Painted or powder-coated black — avoid within a few kilometres of the sea
Simple maintenance that doubles lifespan
Rinse with fresh water and dry with a soft cloth weekly. Never use bathroom cleaners containing acid, bleach or abrasives on any finished tapware.
Frequently asked
- Which tapware finish is best for coastal homes?
- A PVD finish over a solid brass body. PVD bonds to the metal and resists salt air far better than electroplated or painted coatings.
