Start with the sink, not the tap
The most common kitchen tapware mistake in South African homes is choosing a mixer before the sink is finalised. Bowl depth, whether the sink is undermount or top-mount, and the distance from the tap hole to the bowl centre all determine which spout will work.
As a rule, the aerator should sit roughly over the centre of the main bowl. A 200 mm projection over a 450 mm bowl will splash the counter every time it is used.
Match height to your window and splashback
Gooseneck mixers look generous but need clearance. Measure the height from the counter to the underside of an opening window before specifying anything above 380 mm.
- Low-profile (up to 300 mm): windows behind the sink, compact kitchens
- Standard (300–400 mm): most family kitchens, easy pot filling
- Tall gooseneck (400 mm+): island sinks and double-bowl setups
Pull-down or fixed spout?
A pull-down spray earns its place if you rinse large pots, wash produce or clean the sink daily. Look for a magnetic dock and a braided hose with a smooth retraction weight — cheap pull-downs sag within a year.
Understand South African water pressure
Many local homes run low-pressure gravity-fed hot water. Check the minimum operating pressure of any imported mixer; premium European tapware is usually rated for mains pressure and will underperform on a gravity system unless a pump is fitted.
Choose a finish that survives your water
PVD finishes such as Brushed Nickel, Gun Metal and Brushed Brass are far more resistant to hard water and coastal air than electroplated or painted alternatives. Matte Black is striking but shows limescale in hard-water regions unless wiped dry.
